El Toro

While the city of Winnipeg pulses with the influence of rock 'n' roll and free love, Rosie, the eldest of the four Charbonneau children, wants nothing more than to break free and spread her wings. On the brink of turning 18, she dreams of independence, going to university, and pursuing a career in journalism—ambitions rarely granted to women of that era.

But when a financial setback forces the closure of their upscale family restaurant in downtown Winnipeg, the Charbonneaus are compelled to run El Toro, a remote truck-stop diner in an industrial park. From then on, the family relies entirely on the work of each member to keep the business afloat, and any other dream could jeopardize their modest livelihood.

Will Rosie have to give up her aspirations, a fate often reserved for eldest daughters? How can she resist the call of change that will affect every member of her family? For Winnipeg stands on the brink of a new era, and, as that great Bob Dylan song once said, “the times, they are a-changin’.”
